From the beginning of civilization there have been those who have felt inclined to help their neighbors and those around them when they were most in need. This has been demonstrated in every disaster in recorded history up through September 11th and to the ceaseless Hurricanes & Tornadoes on the East Coast of the US in the Summer of 2004.
It is the responsibility of each person to defend themselves and the ones they love. It is only logical, therefore, to know how to use a fire extinguisher, bandage a wound, use an AED and perform CPR, and work with a team to "do the most good for the most people".
Members of Athens-Clarke County CERT are trained in Emergency Preparedness; the types of emergencies that occur in the thousands each and every day, (Cardiac Arrest & Heart Attack, Stroke, Choking, Injuries, Fires, etc.).
The CERT Program was created to allow for the average residents or employees in a particular community to respond to emergencies by assisting their neighbors to "do the most good for the most people" while maintaining their own safety. Therefore logically, a prospective Team Member must spend a significant amount of time in the community where the team exists.
Accordingly, Athens-Clarke County CERT applicants must live or work in Athens-Clarke County. Persons outside of these areas may be admitted on an individual basis and only if these persons plan to return to their communities (vocational or residential) and advocate for the creation of a CERT program. These individuals should contact the Athens-Clarke County CERT Program Coordinator directly at ryanlogan@redcrosseastgeorgia.org.
The Athens-Clarke County CERT program is a not-for-profit entity funded by federal and state grants and is totally free for anyone wishing to take the course. During the training participants will receive all participant materials as well as a CERT kit filled with various supplies that will be useful if a disaster or emergency was to occur.
Upon completion of the full CERT Core Training participants will be provided Team Identification and an Official Certificate of Completion. |
